The Boys Travel Program of the Met Oval/Brooklyn Knights is holding tryouts for the 2007/2008 season at Metropolitan Oval, in Maspeth, Queens. We are looking for committed and serious players to join their competitive and premier level travel teams. If you wish to play in a sophisticated, challenging environment, and be coached by trainers with a proven history of channeling players into successful college programs, mark your calendar.

Met Oval/Brooklyn Knights teams compete at the highest youth levels.  Their recognition as one of less than one hundred Nike-sponsored clubs in the nation, their affiliation with the nation’s largest professional league, the USL (United Soccer League), and US Club Soccer only enhance the club’s ability to insure that it’s mission is fulfilled:

to provide local city talent with opportunities to compete in national and international invitational tournaments so that players can gain exposure to the highest levels of soccer in an effort to place players amongst the elite levels of youth soccer and ultimately into the college ranks.

All training will take place on newly renovated fields in environments free from outside interference.  Players must be able to commit to two evening training sessions per week from September through June and should expect to play games each weekend throughout the fall and spring.  Tournaments will be scheduled throughout the winter and over most holidays.  Successful participation with the Brooklyn Knights throughout the regular season provides our players with access to our Super-Y League program, the premier summer program in the nation.

Walk-ups on the tryout dates are encouraged, but it is best to pre-register

Carlo Acquista Named Director of Coaching at Met Oval

The Metropolitan Oval Foundation has appointed Carlo Acquista is its Director of Coaching. Acquista is also the head coach of St. Francis College’s soccer team as well the Oval’s U-16 boys’ squad.

A native of Whitestone, Queens, Acquista attended St. John’s University, where he excelled both academically and on the pitch for four solid years.

In 1996, the then freshman was part of the legendary Red Storm squad that conquered the NCAA National Championship. He was also a member of two Big East Championship teams during his tenure at St. John’s.

After his playing days were over, Acquista parlayed his talent and experience into an off-the-pitch career, first as a volunteer assistant coach at his alma mater. Other stints include assistant coaching duties at Hofstra University, as well the Brooklyn Knights PDL team.

Metropolitan Oval Foundation President Jim Vogt feels that Acquista was the perfect candidate for this position.

“Being a hometown guy from Queens, who went on to play for an NCAA champion at St. John’s and to coach at St. Francis, Carlo can connect with the city kids and give them the knowledge how to be as successful as him. It’s really a benefit to all the kids in the Met Oval program.”

As the Director of Coaching, Acquista will play a huge role in the Met Oval’s overall operations. His functions will include choosing all coaches for the Met Oval, including Brooklyn Knights teams. He will also oversee all coaching and training staff and supervise the organization’s soccer program.

The Metropolitan Oval, adjacent to 60-58 60th Street in Maspeth, Queens, is the oldest soccer field in continuous use in the .  Since 1998, the Oval has been operated by the Foundation, a § 501(c)(3) not-for-profit serving youth soccer in New York City.

Our U-20 Has Been Competing as Frosinone Met Oval in The Cosmopolitan League
You may wonder where the name comes from. Frosinone is a club in Serie B in Italy:

http://www.frosinonecalcio.com/

Their supporters here in New York formed a club a long time ago, based in the Elmont, Long Island, area (right outside Queens and not that far from Met Oval). We partner with them to run the U-20 team in the men’s league, although it’s mostly players who came through our youth program.

The team has been playing well. They are among the top three teams in the league!  The better players on this team have a shot at being on the Brooklyn Knights team and play in the PDL this year. You will be able to read more about the players that stand out once they sign with the BK.
